The Art Program

Senior Art Program

What is any art but a mold in which to imprison for a moment the shining elusive element which is life itself - life hurrying past us and running away, too strong to stop, too sweet to lose.

Willa Cather (1873-1947), American Author

The Art Program at GetTogether ADHC is an enrichment program designed to provide participants an opportunity to create personal and unique statements through the visual arts. The emphasis of the group is on the creative process and not on the finished product. In 90-minute weekly sessions, each participant’s creative expressions are nurtured and encouraged. The objective of the group is to create a non-threatening environment in which there is no right or wrong way to artistic expression through painting. Participants are encouraged to explore a variety of subject matters. Sessions are designed to meet the needs of the first-time painter as well as those with painting experience.

Participants come to GetTogether with an array of physical and cognitive challenges associated with the aging process. In Art Therapy and Clinical Neuropsychology, author and researcher Dr. Richard Carr emphasizes the empirical evidence supporting the therapeutic advantages of the creative process. “Making art therapeutically may generate a sense of entering a mental state in which fear and anxiety decrease, possibly decoding previous memories.” Noah Hass-Cohen (2008) summarizes what we at GetTogether wish to provide to our participants in the Art Program: “…art work is an expression of how the self is organized internally as well as in relationships with others. It is a visual reiteration of the interplay between the person and their environment.”
